Description

  • Read Across America Day is a nationally recognized day, this year on March 2nd that promotes reading for children
  • United Way has made early literacy a priority and is working to support programming that will help local children read on grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
  • We know that currently 1/3 of our students across the county are not meeting this critical milestone.
  • Children not reading on grade level by the end of third grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school
  • We know that early literacy is key in setting children up for lifelong success in school and in life
  • We launched a volunteer reading program in September 2019, “Reading Friends,” in which local adult volunteers go into local schools and read to children. We appreciate support from Rotary Club of Lebanon and Lebanon Federal Credit Union for their financial support to get Reading Friends up and running.
  • We currently have 68 Reading Friends volunteers who have completed 424 volunteer shifts for a total of 408.5 hours (24,510 minutes) of reading to Lebanon County children
  • We were working to deploy Reading Friends volunteers into first grade classrooms across the county during the week of March 2nd to raise awareness about the importance of early literacy and encouraging reading among children and families when we learned of Jen’s book. This was the perfect opportunity for an organic partnership between our two organizations, as it allowed volunteers to share a book deep rooted in traditions and heritage of our wonderful community.
  • UW and Visit Lebanon Valley recognized we could read the tale of Lebanon Lily to students across Lebanon County and get children excited about reading and excited to visit all of the wonderful destinations Lily visits in the book.
